Oakville / Rutherford
Home to perhaps the California Wine Country’s best-known gourmet food store, Oakville Grocery Company, and world-renowned Robert Mondavi Winery, Oakville offers its 70 or so residents all they might need for a life of gourmet enchantment. The tiny village is also namesake of the surrounding Oakville AVA (American Viticultural Area) and the location of To Kalon Vineyard, the acreage producing the most expensive Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the entire Napa Valley. Acclaimed Oakville area wineries include Far Niente, Opus and Silver Oak.
While it looms large in the minds of food and wine aficionados, Rutherford is the tiniest community with its own post office in the Napa Valley. It maintains its royal presence due to the fact that it rests in the midst of many of the most awarded and respected wineries, vineyards and olive producers in the United States. Perhaps king and queen of the Rutherford zip code are world-renowned Auberge du Soleil and the Rutherford Grill. The village rests along Napa’s Highway 29 north of Oakville and south of St. Helena and, according to the last count, is home to 160 residents.
